THE University of Lagos Alumni Association hereby issue a disclaimer to the general public, on the activities of the above-named ‘Unilag Women Alumnae’ (sic) group.
One of the objectives of the University of Lagos Alumni Association is to promote mutual understanding, co-operation, encourage gender equity, interaction and fraternal relationship amongst the graduates of the University. However, this group masquerading itself as a separate unit seeks to create a schism in the body on the grounds of gender, an antithesis to the principles of equity and integrity, respect, inclusivity and collaboration, themes which we uphold dearly.
Their activities and events are not endorsed by our Association and we condemn in strong terms their suspicious insistence on using the Unilag Alumni name which is now a brand without authorisation.
Members of our womenfolk should not allow themselves to be used by some ambitious individuals who are looking for relevance to divide the Association. The University Alumni is one big family. Our platform actively encourages participation, regardless of gender and our hierarchy is replete with prominent examples of female members who have risen to the pinnacle of all professions and politics and who bring to bear their formidable value and wealth of experience.
The National Executive Committee totally condemns this intransigent move to foment a separate wing misrepresenting the values and spirit of our association rather than promote parity within the body. We distance ourselves unequivocally from this move and hereby advise the University of Lagos Authorities not to allow the University premises be used for such nefarious activities.
This group does not align with our core values. We urge our members and the public to verify the authenticity of any event purportedly organised under our name and to refrain from participating in any unauthorised activities.
Our commitment to fostering a positive and unified community remains unwavering, and we disassociate ourselves from any activities that do not reflect our organisational values “IN DEED AND IN TRUTH.”
